Since I arrived here in
Mawathura my friend Pavi, a radio
announcer at the radio station where I work, has been talking about doing
a story on Kittel. The first time he mentioned the idea I had not a clue
as to what kittel might be. Now, four months after living in the central
region of Sri Lanka, kittel has become an intregal part of my existance.
Kittel is Sri Lankan honey- a treacle made from the pods of the kittel
tree- and is used to make many sweet sweet sweets. One of these is Lavaria (lavar-ree-ya). To some of my friends here I am known, in fact, as Tanya-Lavaria because if lavaria is in my local cart'e (a Sri Lankan caf'e), then youcan be sure that i will eat at least one. This image was taken at my local cart'e and I had just consumed 2 Lavaria's (which, by the way, is kittel heated with coconut to form a brown sticky substance and wrapped in String Hoppers -thin noodles). Pavi stands prepared in the middle and to the left is our local three wheeler driver and friend, Nuvan. My story from here, is mostly a story of images. If you want to understand the process of Kittel making you'll have to be able to read Pavi's Sinhala or Tamil version of this story. But for me, this day was a succession of richimages and spontaneous interactions that moved me beyond all the words I couldn't understand...... &nb |
